NHL Action Heats Up: Canadiens, Jets, and More Secure Weekend Victories
Despite the conclusion of the World Series, Saturday delivered a thrilling slate of games in the National Hockey League, marked by high-scoring contests and dramatic finishes. From overtime winners to penalty shootout decisions, fans were treated to a full day of compelling hockey action.
Canadiens Edge Senators in Overtime Thriller
In a back-and-forth affair at the Bell Centre, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 in extra time, continuing their pursuit of a third consecutive win. Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky ignited the offense for the Canadiens, establishing an early lead in the first period.
The Senators responded in the second, with Drake Batherson narrowing the gap. Following a missed penalty shot by Lane Hutson, Mike Amadio leveled the score just before the period’s end. Ottawa briefly took the lead courtesy of Tim Stutzle with 7:33 remaining in regulation, but the Canadiens refused to concede. Ivan Demidov, a fourth-line winger, found the equalizer with just 2:23 left on the clock, sending the game to overtime.
It was Alex Newhook who ultimately sealed the victory for Montreal, scoring a decisive goal just 100 seconds into the extra frame, securing the Canadiens’ fifth overtime/penalty win of the season. The Florida Panthers overcame the Dallas Stars 4-3 in a penalty shootout, with Brad Marchand, who scored the game’s first goal, being the sole scorer in the shootout. The San Jose Sharks also emerged victorious, defeating the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime thanks to a goal from Philipp Kurashev.
Jets Dominate Penguins with Connor’s Double
The Winnipeg Jets, last season’s President’s Trophy winners, delivered a convincing 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gabriel Vilardi and Brad Lambert quickly established a two-goal lead within the first three minutes. Vladislav Namestnikov extended the advantage in the second period, putting significant pressure on the Penguins. Kyle Connor added a fourth goal on the power play, solidifying the Jets’ control.
Despite goals from Sidney Crosby and Blake Lizotte, the Penguins couldn’t mount a comeback. Connor capped off the performance with a goal into an empty net, completing a two-goal performance.
Toronto and Minnesota Showcase Offensive Prowess
The Toronto Maple Leafs also secured a 5-2 win, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers on the road and ending their opponents’ three-game winning streak. Five different players scored for the Leafs in a display of balanced offensive power. The New Jersey Devils defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 away, while the Columbus Blue Jackets secured a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues, scoring in each period.
A thrilling game in Buffalo saw the Sabres win 4-3 against the Washington Capitals in a penalty shootout, ending a three-game losing streak. Bowen Byram scored the decisive penalty, marking the Sabres’ fourth consecutive game decided in extra time. The Minnesota Wild secured a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks with two goals in under two minutes during the final period.
Overtime Decides Oilers and Rangers Contests
The Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers both secured overtime victories, each by a score of 3-2. Evan Bouchard was the hero for the Oilers in their win against the Chicago Blackhawks, while Will Cuylle scored the winning goal for the Rangers against the Seattle Kraken, despite the team twice relinquishing the lead.
