Nicaraguan President and Government Members Banned from U.S. Entry

by time news

US President Joe Biden signed a decree barring Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, members of his government, national and local authorities and their immediate family from entering the country. The measures against representatives of the country’s authorities are explained by the suppression of democracy in the country.

According to the text of the decree published on the White House website, entry into the United States is prohibited for members of the Nicaraguan government under the leadership of President Daniel Ortega, the president himself and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo. The prohibition also extends to persons who “formulate or implement policies or actions that undermine or weaken democratic institutions or impede the return of democracy to Nicaragua, and beneficiaries (such politicians – “B”)».

In another document, Mr. Biden extended the emergency situation (ES) in relation to the situation in Nicaragua, introduced by his predecessor Donald Trump in November 2018. Emergency situations in the United States allow, in particular, to impose sanctions. Mr. Biden noted that the “systematic destruction and undermining of democratic institutions and the rule of law” by Daniel Ortega’s regime in Nicaragua continues to pose a threat to US national security and foreign policy. The emergency regime in Nicaragua, which was supposed to end on November 27, 2021, has been extended for a year.

Earlier, the US and the EU did not recognize the results of the November presidential elections in Nicaragua, following which Daniel Ortega is running for his fifth presidential term. Mr. Ortega has been leading the country since 2007.
