Between 2014 and 2021, Niels Giffey played 398 competitive games in the Alba Berlin jersey – of course about half of them in the Arena am Ostbahnhof. The walk from the multi-storey car park to the inconspicuous door that serves as the player’s entrance, the walkway to the Alba cabin sprayed with colorful motifs from the Berlin cityscape and the wooden parquet floor laid in the large hall – the native Berliner knows all of this like the back of his hand. And yet Giffey has a premiere on Thursday: “I don’t know the away cabin yet,” says the 31-year-old with a laugh, “I’ve never been there.”
