Nintendo Switch Online Datamine Hints at Event Gifts for Switch and Switch 2

A fresh update to the Nintendo Switch Online applet indicates Nintendo is preparing a new “Event Gifts” system for both the original Switch and Switch 2, bringing custom loading animations, unique audio cues, and multi-event support despite official silence from the company.

Data miners combing through recent code files have uncovered the framework for a digital distribution feature that could soon change how players pick up promotional items. The discovery stems from an analysis of version 6.3.0 of the Nintendo Switch Online applet, corresponding to revision 482b7f33, which introduced several backend changes aimed at handling digital distribution.

What the Datamine Reveals Inside Version 6.3.0

The code dive exposed a new URL domain dedicated to managing incoming rewards, alongside specific assets designed for user interaction. Twitter/X user idocode01 has shared his findings from a datamine of a new Nintendo Switch Online app update, which appears to have implemented an Event Gifts system. Among the elements found are a new domain to manage the reception of gifts, a specific loading animation, a sound of about two seconds upon receiving them, and support for multiple simultaneous events with their own videos, thumbnails, and contents, although Nintendo has not yet officially announced this feature. According to the Twitter/X user, there can be multiple gift events going on at the same time. Each event also has its own unique videos, thumbnails and other content.

Researchers extracted a dedicated loading animation paired with a distinct audio cue that plays when a user successfully claims a reward. The infrastructure supports multiple simultaneous gift campaigns, with each campaign capable of running its own unique video assets, thumbnail images, and associated promotional content across both the original console and its successor. In response to a comparison with challenges previously made available in classic game applications, the person responsible for the discovery stated that it is a new system of gifts.

Speculating on Digital Rewards and Past Challenges

While the full purpose of the feature is difficult to assess based on the limited details available, it is possibly intended to allow users to gain access to unique in-game items, such as skins, during specific events. Most recently, the service introduced a limited-time event this year in which players could complete themed Donkey Kong challenges to earn collectible cards. Nintendo will soon be providing special physical cards to those who completed every challenge.

Industry watchers suggest the new system could serve a similar purpose, potentially distributing profile icons, cosmetic in-game items like character skins, or entirely new types of digital tokens during special calendar windows. There’s a chance it’s something that doesn’t end up getting implemented at all, but it’s always interesting to speculate.

Broader Updates and Unconfirmed Official Plans

The discovery arrives amid a busy period of classic library expansions for subscribers. Back in July, Nintendo announced a wave of additions for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, bringing Virtual Boy games to the Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The update included two previously unreleased titles and confirmed the arrival of Super Mario Sunshine. The Virtual Boy library launched with a selection of classic games, while D-Hopper and Zero Racers became available on August 4. Both titles were originally completed for the Virtual Boy in 1996 but were cancelled before release following the commercial failure of the hardware. D-Hopper, originally known as Dragon Hopper, is a top-down action-adventure game in which players guide a young dragon prince on a rescue mission. Zero Racers reimagines the F-Zero formula as a 3D tunnel racing game. Their arrival on Nintendo Switch marks the first time either game has been officially released to the public. Super Mario Sunshine joined the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 13 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

Despite the functional code and embedded audio clues sitting in the latest app revision, Nintendo has made no public announcements regarding the Event Gifts feature, leaving its official rollout timeline completely open.
