What began as a casual afternoon watching her grandson play a brand-new multiplayer shooter in September 2017 turned into a daily routine. While the game was still in its infancy just two months after launch, Cath Bowie jumped on the Fortnite train very early, long before the battle royale mode evolved into a global cultural phenomenon.
Her family initially doubted anyone would tune in to watch an older woman play video games. Rather than discouraging her, that skepticism fueled her determination.
“As a young guy, he just couldn’t believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me. Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it.”
