Patna: Leaving the RJD-led grand alliance and returning to the BJP-led NDA, Nitish Kumar has seen the pros and cons of both sides. Now they know very well with whom they feel comfortable. Currently Nitish is with NDA. No one knows on what conditions his return to NDA took place, but it is estimated that his return would not have been unconditional. BJP was definitely missing a partner like Nitish in Bihar, but what was the compulsion in front of Nitish that he had to break his oath. Nitish had said that he will die, he will disappear, but will not go with BJP now. Reminding this, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has also revealed how he had folded hands in front of Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi and apologized for his earlier mistake in order to go with the Grand Alliance. It is also important to know why Nitish had left NDA. Only then can an accurate estimate be made as to why Nitish Kumar was forced to move between two camps in just three and a quarter years.

Understand Nitish’s compulsion

When we assess Nitish’s movements, one thing becomes very clear that Nitish was extremely discouraged by the plight of JDU in the 2020 assembly elections. Only 43 JDU MLAs had won. However, despite this, BJP, following the coalition principle, made him the Chief Minister. When Nitish reviewed the reasons for the downfall of JDU, it came to light that the main reason for this was Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan, who was then supported by the BJP. Their candidates reduced the votes against JDU. As a result, JDU had to face defeat on about 30 seats. In his mind, Nitish was no less angry with BJP than he was with Chirag. Because BJP did not stop Chirag from doing so. However, after the formation of the government, the state level leaders of BJP kept making Nitish realize that he has become the CM only by their grace. BJP leaders did not shy away from pointing fingers at Nitish’s work. This was the reason why Nitish was forced to take shelter in the Grand Alliance.

RJD took Nitish in its fold

Apart from Nitish and Lalu family, no one knew that RJD had put any condition before Nitish for supporting him. Yes, some of the then JDU leaders like Upendra Kushwaha were definitely predicting that the pulse would be black. They were calling it a ‘deal’ with Nitish’s RJD. To expose this deal, Upendra Kushwaha created a stir and finally separated from JDU. Later it came to light that Lalu Yadav had set a condition for making his son Tejashwi Yadav the CM. It was decided that Nitish would play an important role in national politics and hand over the throne of Bihar to Tejashwi. Nitish was also ready for this. This was the reason why he first started the exercise of opposition unity. They got their first success when leaders of opposite nature sat together in Patna on 23 June 2023. Later, Nitish did not get the status in the opposition camp that he had hoped for. Meetings of opposition leaders continued, but no important role could be decided for Nitish. The proposal to make him the coordinator also came when it did not seem to be of any use. When it was confirmed that there was no remote possibility of Nitish entering national politics, then RJD started pressurizing Tejashwi for coronation by reminding him of the conditions. At that time, Nitish could not think of any other option other than changing camps and remaining the CM.

Nitish returns to NDA

Reliable sources say that Nitish had put forward two points regarding his return to NDA. First, he should be allowed to remain CM at least till the current tenure. His second point was that along with the Lok Sabha, assembly elections should also be held. BJP agreed to accept his first point, but clearly refused the second point. BJP said that if assembly elections are held along with Lok Sabha, the mood of the voters may change. Therefore, let the Lok Sabha elections be held first. After that, assembly elections can be held any time. Nitish is in a hurry for the assembly elections because due to less MLAs he has to move here and there like a brinjal in Dagra. This means that there is a strong possibility that after the Lok Sabha elections, mid-term assembly elections will be held in Bihar.
