Notably, more significant snow accumulation was observed towards the high glaciers of Oisans, the western massif of Taillefer/Rochail, and the east faces of the Grandes rousses.

Avalanche Risk Assessment

The report identified localized residues of small, wet avalanches in northern aspects, likely from the previous weekend. A larger avalanche was observed at a distance towards Les Rousses on the south face of the Col des Quirlies/Petit Sauvage.the snowpack is described as little snow,heterogeneous and generally stable,with potentially localized small slab structures on north-facing slopes.

A key concern is the evolution of recent surface snow into powder without cohesion – described as “flat face type grains” – due to the dry and cool weather. This fragile layer coudl become problematic with future snow precipitation or wind transport, particularly in sheltered valleys, corridors, at the bottom of slopes, and near rocky bars.

Snowpack Stability Tests

Detailed snowpack surveys and shovel tests were conducted at approximately 2500m and 2800m, where the total snow thickness was around 60cm.

  • At 2500m, minimal movement was detected, with only small surface patches and crusted snow in sun-exposed areas.
  • At 2800m on a steady north-facing slope,an expanded column compression test revealed small ruptures 7cm thick on the surface during the second blow (weak layer: less windy snow/flat faces and rolled snow). A subsequent rupture occurred 34cm from the surface on the 14th blow, but without propagation (weak layer: more compact/previously moistened cups and old grains).

Overall Skiability and Route Details
