South Jersey Nonprofit Reels After Theft of Hundreds of Christmas Toys

A devastating theft has left Wheels of Change, a vital resource center in South Jersey, scrambling to replace hundreds of stolen gifts just weeks before Christmas. The incident, discovered over the weekend, has jeopardized the holiday season for over 600 children in need.

The nonprofit, located in West Deptford, New Jersey, reported that a thief or thieves cut the locks on their trailer and made off with bags of presents intended for local families. The organization had carefully stored the toys in the trailer to prepare for its annual holiday distribution.

“Honestly, my stomach dropped. I wanted to cry,” said the founder of Wheels of Change. “As we were having a food distribution outside for Thanksgiving we noticed that the locks were cut.”

No Leads in Holiday Toy Heist

Authorities are currently investigating the theft, but the lack of surveillance cameras around the building presents a significant challenge. Organizers have no information regarding when the incident occurred or who may be responsible. Only some clothing items were left behind at the scene, offering few clues to investigators.

Community Rallies to Restore Holiday Cheer

Despite the setback, Wheels of Change remains determined to ensure every child receives a gift this year. The organization, which serves thousands of families annually, is appealing to the public for assistance.

“We are going to have to find toys for those kids,” the founder stated. “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle so I know that we are going to receive tenfold and we are already seeing it.”

Local families and businesses have already begun to step up, demonstrating the strong community spirit in South Jersey. The organization aims to collect enough donations to replace the stolen toys by Dec. 13.

How to Donate

Wheels of Change is currently accepting donations of new toys geared toward children ages 7 and up. Donations can be dropped off at their location at 1997 Gateway Boulevard, Suite 4 in Westville, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The theft serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by organizations dedicated to serving vulnerable populations, but the outpouring of support demonstrates the enduring power of community and the unwavering spirit of giving during the holiday season.
