CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday, falling 11-9 to the University of Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Klockner Stadium. The loss drops Notre Dame to 6-1 on the year, a setback after a strong start to the season. The Cavaliers’ victory marks the first time this season the Irish have been unable to secure a win, and it raises questions about their dominance as they head into the latter part of their schedule.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, characterized by several lead changes and a frustrating number of near misses for the Irish. Despite a strong offensive effort from Josh Yago, Matt Jeffery, and Will Maheras, each of whom scored twice, Notre Dame struggled to capitalize on opportunities, hitting the goalpost or crossbar four times throughout the contest. Goalkeeper Thomas Ricciardelli delivered a solid performance with 11 saves, but ultimately conceded 11 goals.
Early Exchanges and Irish Response
Virginia came out strong, scoring the first two goals of the game to take an early 2-0 lead. This marked the first time this season Notre Dame had faced an early deficit. However, the Fighting Irish responded quickly, and decisively. Within a span of less than three minutes, goals from Matt Jeffery, Fisher Finley, and Josh Yago flipped the script, giving Notre Dame a 3-2 advantage. The first quarter concluded with the score tied at 3-3, setting the stage for a competitive afternoon.
Irish Maintain Lead Through Second Quarter
Notre Dame continued to press in the second quarter, extending their lead with a goal from Teddy Lally. Jeffery then added his second goal of the day, pushing the Irish ahead 5-3. A Virginia goal narrowed the gap, but Notre Dame quickly countered with a transition goal sparked by a save and outlet pass from Ricciardelli to Chris Reinhardt, who scored his first goal of the season, making it 6-4. The Cavaliers managed to score one more before halftime, reducing Notre Dame’s lead to 6-5 at the break.
Third-Quarter Battle and Fourth-Quarter Struggles
The Irish started the third quarter strong, with Will Maheras scoring off a feed from Yago to extend the lead to 7-5. Virginia responded with two quick goals to tie the game at 7-7. Yago then capitalized on a Virginia turnover to regain the lead for Notre Dame at 8-7. However, the Cavaliers continued to battle, scoring two of the final three goals of the quarter to tie the game at 9-9 heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter proved to be the undoing for Notre Dame. The Irish offense faltered, unable to discover the back of the net as Virginia clamped down defensively. The Cavaliers scored the move-ahead goal with 3:29 remaining in regulation and added an insurance goal with an empty net in the closing seconds, sealing the 11-9 victory.
Looking Ahead: Showdown with Richmond
Notre Dame will conclude its non-conference schedule with a significant matchup against No. 2 Richmond on Saturday, April 4, at 12:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. Local time). The game will be played at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium in Evanston, Illinois, as part of the second annual Lacrosse Day in Chicago. The Northwestern women’s lacrosse team will follow with a game against USC. Tickets are available for purchase here. The loss to Virginia serves as a valuable lesson for Notre Dame as they navigate the remainder of their season. The upcoming game against Richmond will be a true test of their ability to bounce back from adversity and reaffirm their position as a top contender in college lacrosse.
