Several highways located near the epicenter, and some 33,500 homes are however without electricity.
No anomalies have been reported at this stage at Japan’s nuclear power plants after a series of powerful earthquakes in the central Ishikawa department on Monday after 4:00 p.m. (07:00 GMT) caused a tsunami, according to the government spokesperson.
«It was confirmed that there were no anomalies at the Shika nuclear power plant (located in the Ishikawa department, Editor’s note) and on other sites at the moment“, declared government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi. However, some 33,500 homes are without electricity, according to suppliers. The departments of Toyama, Ishikawa and Niigata located on the island of Honshu, which overlook the Sea of Japan, are affected by these power cuts.
In addition, however, the transport authority announced that several highways located near the epicenter were closed until further notice in the central Japan area. High-speed train (shinkansen) traffic between Tokyo and Ishikawa Prefecture was also interrupted, Japan Railways announced.
