‘No man shall open his mouth any more’; Amit Shah after the meeting to resolve the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah discussed the border issue between Karnataka and Maharashtra with the Chief Ministers of both the states. A meeting was held between Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraja Bomme and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in New Delhi under the leadership of Amit Shah.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra attended the meeting. After the meeting, Amit Shah told the media that the discussion ended on a good note and both the Chief Ministers agreed to resolve the border dispute constitutionally.

Amit Shah said that both governments have agreed to the proposal to form a committee headed by a senior IPS officer. He said that law and order situation in the states will be maintained and it will be ensured that locals and outsiders do not face any problem.

Amit Shah also said that till the decision of the Supreme Court, the two states will not argue with each other. He added that opposition parties should not try to politicize the issue.

“Until the decision of the Supreme Court, both the states will not make any claims or make statements to each other. The three ministers from both sides will discuss issues including the border dispute.

Opposition parties in Maharashtra and Karnataka should not stop to politicize the issue. Let us wait for the decision of the committee constituted to resolve the issue and the decision of the Supreme Court. I am sure NCP, Congress and Uddav Thackeray group will cooperate with this,’ said Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, Amit Shah said that some fake social media accounts are working to worsen the situation. Some fake Twitter accounts have come up in the name of political leaders of both the states. They are spreading wrong information. FIR will be registered against such Twitter accounts and necessary action will be taken. Such people will be brought out,’ Amit Shah informed the media.

The dispute between the states ruled by the BJP and a faction of the Shiv Sena with the support of the BJP had created a headache for the party. That is why people including Amit Shah came down to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute

Since the formation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, there has been a border dispute with neighboring Karnataka’s Belagavi district. About 70 percent of Belagavi’s villages are inhabited by Maratha-speaking people. Since then, Maharashtra has been demanding that 865 villages like Belagavi, Karwar and Nipani be given to them.

At that time, Maharashtra had also said that 260 villages in Maharashtra inhabited by Kannada speakers would be given to Karnataka. However, Karnataka has been opposing these things from the beginning. With this, both the states approached the Supreme Court on the dispute.

In recent years, some committees have been formed to resolve the issue, but the border dispute has continued.

After a meeting was held in November 2022 under the leadership of Eknath Shinde to assess the current situation of the border dispute, the issue is now being discussed again. The very next day, when Basavaraja Bomme came to the scene claiming about forty villages in Maharashtra, this led to heated political discussions. The arguments between the leaders of the two states became active on and off social media.

But the dispute dragged on until inter-state bus services were halted in December. Both factions have made allegations of violence. On December 13, when many vehicles were attacked in Belagavi and Pune and tension was created, the Centre’s immediate intervention came.
