san Diego’s nonprofit sector is experiencing a surge in support, with the San Diego Foundation (SDF) spearheading efforts to provide vital resources, funding avenues, and professional development opportunities for organizations dedicated to building just, equitable, and resilient communities throughout the region. These initiatives aim to empower nonprofits and amplify their impact in addressing critical local needs.
Strengthening Nonprofit Foundations
The San Diego Foundation recognizes the importance of long-term sustainability for nonprofit organizations. To that end, SDF encourages leaders to establish nonprofit funds at the foundation, a strategic move designed to secure their good work for years to come. This proactive approach allows hundreds of forward-thinking organizations to build assets and ensure continued service delivery.
Grant Opportunities for 2026-2027
Several significant grant cycles are now open, offering considerable funding for targeted programs.
The Chula vista Community Foundation (ICVCF) is accepting proposals for it’s 2026-2027 grant cycle, focusing on senior well-being. Grant requests ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 will be considered for projects addressing social isolation, transportation access, and food insecurity – including the needs of seniors’ pets. Applications are due November 4th.
Building Capacity & Expertise
San Diego State University (SDSU) will be holding a 6-week course on starting a nonprofit, complete with practical resources. The San diego Public Library also offers free, interactive online courses, requiring only a valid library card for enrollment.
Beyond local offerings, Nonprofit Learning Lab and nonprofit Ready provide national-level training and resources, including courses and certificates in fundraising, grant writing, and more.
Leveraging Data for Impact
Recognizing the power of feedback, organizations can utilize Listen4Good to gather and analyze insights from stakeholders. This 18-month capacity-building program provides 1:1 coaching, group learning, and a web application to drive impact through participatory measurement. Since 2016, Listen4Good has supported over 1000 organizations in refining their strategies and maximizing their effectiveness.
City of san Diego Engages with Nonprofits
The City of San Diego is actively seeking input from the nonprofit sector. The city has released an Inclusive Public Engagement Guide + Feedback to help departments engage the public effectively and inclusively. Additionally, the Parks & Recreation Department is conducting a survey to gather feedback from stakeholders and community organizations to shape future programming.
Diverse Funding Streams Available
A wide range of additional funding opportunities are currently available. Clean Air For Kids provides air filtration systems to schools in impacted communities at no cost for five years. The Waitt Foundation’s Rapid Ocean Conservation (ROC) Grants Program offers small grants for urgent conservation solutions.
The California Wellness Foundation is accepting Letters of Interest for its Advancing Wellness Grant Program, prioritizing support for low-income communities, people of color, youth, immigrants, and rural residents. The Richard and Jean Coyne Family Foundation supports educational initiatives for economically disadvantaged high school students pursuing art school.
Further opportunities include the U.S. Bank Foundation’s Community Possible Grant Program,focusing on workforce development,neighborhood revitalization,and artistic enrichment; the W.K.
