A commanding performance from Britain’s Cameron Norrie has propelled him into the second round of the Paris Masters, where he will face the world number one, Carlos Alcaraz. Norrie secured his spot with a straight-sets victory over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, 6-3, 6-4, on Monday.
A Hard-Fought Victory
The match, characterized by a total of six breaks of serve, saw Norrie, currently ranked 31st globally, overcome a resilient challenge from Baez, who sits 12 places below him in the rankings. Norrie initially seized control, winning the opening three games of the first set. However, Baez briefly leveled the score at 3-3 before Norrie regained momentum, ultimately converting his second set point to claim the first set.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Norrie again establishing an early 3-0 lead. He faced considerable pressure, needing to save a break point in the sixth game and a further four in the tenth, before finally closing out the match. “I was really tight going to serve for the match,” Norrie shared with Sky Sports. “I said I was going to pretend it was 0-30 and then it was 0-30 and 0-40. It was about getting the job done and it was nice to face some adversity. It was not a typical match. He fought well.”
Alcaraz Awaits in Tuesday’s Showdown
Norrie’s upcoming opponent, Carlos Alcaraz, experienced an earlier exit from last year’s Paris Masters, falling in the third round. The Spaniard is returning to action after securing a victory over Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final at the end of September. Historically, Alcaraz holds a significant advantage in their head-to-head record, having won five of their seven encounters, including a straight-sets defeat of Norrie in the quarterfinals of this year’s Wimbledon championships.
Fellow Brit in Action
Adding to the British presence at the tournament, Jacob Fearnley will also compete in first-round action on Monday, facing 12th-seeded Andrey Rublev.
This sets the stage for an exciting few days in Paris as both British players aim to make their mark on the prestigious Masters 1000 event.
