Norris Overtake Under Scrutiny: Cunoda Penalized in Contentious Race Incident

A controversial incident involving Lando Norris and Júki Cunoda during a recent race has drawn the attention of sports commissioners, resulting in a penalty for Cunoda. The clash, which occurred on lap 23, sparked a debate over driving standards and the interpretation of track limit regulations.

The On-Track Battle

Norris, after a pit stop, was aggressively making his way through the field when he encountered Cunoda, who had started the race on hard tires and was strategically attempting to assist Max Verstappen. The pivotal moment arrived when Norris attempted to overtake Cunoda. According to officials, Cunoda was penalized 5 seconds and received one penalty point for his actions.

The Stewards’ Ruling

The core of the issue, as determined by the stewards, revolved around Cunoda’s defensive maneuvers. While the immediate concern was that Cunoda appeared to push Norris off the track, the official violation cited was that he “made more than one change of direction to maintain his position.” This is a breach of Article 2 b) in Appendix IV of Appendix L of the International Sports Series regulations.

“Car No. 4 (Norris) was making an overtaking maneuver on Car No. 22 (Cunoda). Car No. 22 made several changes of direction, which ultimately resulted in Car No. 4 having to go off the track to avoid a collision. By doing so, Car No. 22 also effectively pushed Car No. 4 off the track,” a statement from the stewards explained.

No Penalty for Norris Despite Off-Track Overtake

Despite completing the overtake off the track – narrowly avoiding a collision – Norris was not penalized. The stewards clarified that this was due to Cunoda’s prior actions.

“The driver of car #4 overtook car #22 off the track, but this happened because the driver of car #22 made several maneuvers to defend his position against car #4,” the stewards stated. “Had car #22 not made these maneuvers, car #4 would have passed it without leaving the track; it moved off the track to avoid contact with car #22.”

Crucially, the Driving Standards Directive was invoked, stating that when a car is “pushed” off track, it is not considered a track limit violation. “Although technically the overtaking occurred off-track, in light of the above we have decided not to take any further action,” officials concluded.

Similar Penalties Issued

Cunoda was not the only driver to receive a 5-second penalty for similar defensive tactics during the race. Both Lance Stroll and Oliver Bearman were also penalized earlier in the competition for comparable infractions, highlighting a renewed focus on maintaining consistent driving standards.
