As it is reported that North Korea will send about 10,000 troops to Russia, there is a growing possibility that this will have a significant impact not only on the Korean Peninsula but also on the security of the entire Northeast Asia. There are criticisms that more stringent countermeasures should be taken against the close ties between Russia and North Korea.

North Korea’s deployment of troops is analyzed to be in accordance with the ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty’ (Russian-North Korean Treaty) signed with Russia last June. With North Korea making sacrifices and supporting troops in the war in Ukraine, there are concerns that the relationship between the two countries could be upgraded to a blood alliance in the future. If a similar situation occurs on the Korean Peninsula, Russia will also have no choice but to provide troops.

The National Intelligence Service announced on the 18th, “We detected that North Korea was transporting North Korean special forces to the Russian region via a Russian naval transport ship from the 8th to the 13th, confirming the start of the North Korean military’s participation in the war.”

He continued, “Four landing ships and three frigates belonging to the Russian Pacific Fleet completed the first transfer of about 1,500 North Korean special forces from the areas near North Korea’s Chongjin, Hamhung, and Musudan to Vladivostok, Russia during the period,” adding, “The second transport operation will take place soon.” “It is planned,” he added.

This is the first time that North Korea has dispatched large-scale troops to Russia. Intelligence authorities predict that North Korea’s support to Russia could exceed 10,000 people.

North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un’s decision to make this decision at the expense of the North Korean military appears to have been influenced by his decision to improve Russia-North Korea relations amid rising inter-Korean tensions.

With North Korea’s latest military support, Russia is in fact in a position where it will have no choice but to support troops if a similar situation, such as war, occurs on the Korean Peninsula.

A military official said, “This incident could elevate the relationship between the two countries to the level of a blood alliance,” and added, “For us, this is the worst-case scenario.”

Some also observe that North Korea may receive transfers of advanced weapons technology from Russia in return for military support. Currently, North Korea is developing hypersonic ballistic missiles and military reconnaissance satellites, but this is not feasible as it requires advanced technology.

The general view within the military is that if Russia transfers such technology to North Korea in large quantities, it could pose a great threat to our military.

Air Force Chief of Staff Lee Young-soo heard the news during the National Assembly audit that day and said, “If the content is true, I think it is serious. It seems that these concerns were at play in the response that “it is very dangerous for the North Korean military to participate in the war.”

A military official said, “Following the Russia-North Korea Treaty, concerns that North Korean troops may be dispatched to the Ukraine War have become reality,” adding, “North Korea is expected to focus on testing weapons and gaining practical combat experience through this deployment.”
