Northern Boil: Unpacking Abnormal Weather Patterns

by Ahmed Ibrahim

Northern Norway is set for a sweltering weekend, with temperatures potentially soaring to 30 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the southern part of the country can expect heavy rainfall, especially on Saturday.

Northern Norway set for ‘tropical’ heatwave, while south braces for rain

  • Northern Norway could reach 30°C, with inner regions facing “tropical” conditions and thunderstorms.
  • Southern and Eastern Norway are forecast to receive significant rainfall on Saturday, up to 38 millimeters in the capital.
  • The wet weather in the south is expected to improve by Sunday as low pressure shifts west.
  • Warmer air masses in the south may bring sun when clouds clear.

Residents in Oslo should prepare for a damp weekend, with forecasts indicating as much as 38 millimeters of rain on Saturday. This could make for a wet atmosphere at the Norway Cup final at Ekeberg.

State meteorologist Rafael Escobar Løvdahl told Dagbladet that Southern and Eastern Norway will bear the brunt of the rainfall. While Trøndelag and Northern Norway might see isolated showers, the main impact will be further south.

“There will probably be big local differences,” Løvdahl noted, explaining that pinpointing the exact areas for the 38 millimeters of rain is still to come.

Conditions improve for southern Norway

The outlook brightens for Sunday, as the low-pressure system is expected to move towards Western Norway. Løvdahl sees a silver lining in the precipitation, stating, “This is good news for lawns, farmers and water reservoirs.”

Even in the south, warmer air masses are present, but cloud cover is expected to limit the sunshine. However, Løvdahl assured that conditions will improve with periods of sun as the clouds dissipate.

‘Tropical’ conditions expected in the north

Northern Norway is undoubtedly the weather winner this weekend, according to Løvdahl. Temperatures could reach 30 degrees Celsius, described as “abnormally hot.”

The heat is predicted to be particularly intense in inland areas of Troms and Finnmark, where conditions could be “tropical” and thunderstorms are possible.

The meteorologist clarified that while the south will also experience warmth, it won’t reach the extreme levels seen in the north.
