Two men in their 30s are in custody following the deaths of a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s on the island of Karmøy, in Rogaland county, Norway. The pair were apprehended over the weekend and formally detained today following court appearances in Haugesund.
The men were remanded in custody for four weeks, with the first two weeks to be served in complete isolation. A four-week ban on letters, visits, and media contact has as well been imposed, according to police attorney Unni Byberg Malmin. The court agreed with prosecutors that there was a significant risk of evidence being tampered with or destroyed if the men were released.
The victims were residents of municipally-owned apartments on Karmøy, which provide access to healthcare support services. Attorneys Synne Netland Øye and Elisabeth Rød are representing the families of the deceased.

Police are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry in the investigation, including analysis of electronic data and video footage. “We have gathered electronic traces and video material and are continuing investigations at the scene,” Malmin told NRK. “A number of investigative steps are still underway.” She declined to provide details about the condition of the scene or the estimated time of death, citing the ongoing investigation.
Investigation Focused on Potential Connections
An autopsy was performed on the male victim yesterday, and an autopsy of the female victim is scheduled for today. Police conducted an initial interview with one of the suspects on Sunday, but Malmin declined to disclose any details of that conversation. The interview with the second suspect has been postponed indefinitely due to his health condition.
Authorities have stated We see too early to speculate on a motive or the sequence of events leading to the deaths. “Police are still investigating this case with significant resources,” Malmin said. “We cannot release more details at this time due to the investigation.”
On Sunday, police revealed that there was a known connection between the two suspects and the two victims. “It is not a family relationship between those involved,” explained police attorney Fredrik Martin Soma to NRK. “They knew each other; there was an acquaintance relationship between them. But we will require to provide more information about the nature of that relationship later.”
Community Responds to Tragedy
The son of the deceased man shared a statement on social media, describing his father’s death as “unfathomable and very sad.” He remembered his father as a man who faced many challenges but also possessed a good sense of humor, compassion, and warmth.
The Karmøy municipal government held a crisis meeting on Sunday. Following the meeting, municipal director Vibeke Vikse Johnsen expressed gratitude to the police for their response. “We are very grateful that the police have contributed significant resources to ensure the safety of our community. We would like to thank them for their work,” she wrote in a text message to NRK.

Mayor Leiv Helge Marhaug (H) described the situation as a tragic event. “The police have done a fantastic job and have managed to apprehend two people. That reduces the concern,” he said.
The investigation into the deaths on Karmøy is ongoing. Police have not released further details about the victims or the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
The next scheduled step in the legal process is a follow-up hearing regarding the suspects’ detention, which is expected within the next four weeks.
