/ The Norwegian Police Command decided, on Saturday, that police officers would carry weapons until further notice, due to threats received by the Muslim community.

“The Director General of Police decided to arm the police nationwide, effective Saturday afternoon,” she wrote in a statement.

She added: “The context is the threats against Islamic religious communities and Eid al-Fitr next week.”

For his part, police spokesman Rohr Hansen told Agence France-Presse, “This is about threats to mosques.”

Police officers generally do not carry weapons in the Scandinavian country, but they are allowed to do so exceptionally, as happened during the Easter period from March 27 to April 2.

The authorities have not changed the threat alert level, which is currently considered “moderate.”
