Unusually Cold Blast to Bring Snow to low Elevations Across Italy in Late November
A powerful polar outbreak is poised to deliver a significant drop in temperatures across Italy, with the potential for snowfall reaching unusually low altitudes by the end of November. Meteorologist Mattia Gussoni reports that this shift towards winter-like conditions will be especially pronounced after Thursday, November 20th.
The first signs of the approaching disturbance will be felt over the coming weekend, bringing heavy rainfall and snowfall to the Alpine arc above 1,900 to 2,000 meters. This precipitation is expected to decrease by Monday, November 17th. However, the core of the cold front will arrive on Thursday, November 20th, initiating a period of unsettled weather.
“This will be a more winter-style configuration with cold currents descending from Northern Europe towards the Mediterranean basin,” Gussoni stated.
Snowfall expected at Lower Altitudes
The dramatic temperature decrease, driven by northern winds, is forecast to bring snowfall to the Alps at elevations above 500-600 meters, and to the central-northern Apennines above 1,100-1,300 meters. More concerningly, the speed of the cold air intrusion and the frigid temperatures create a considerable risk of snow falling to very low elevations – including the foothills and even the plains – in the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, and Triveneto.
This phenomenon, known as heavy snowfall, occurs when cold air is transferred from higher altitudes to the ground, induced by heavy precipitation. While visually spectacular – characterized by large, wet, and heavy flakes – these intense snowfalls can also create significant challenges for transportation.
Areas at risk and the specific altitudes at which snow may fall are still being refined, and further updates are expected. Gussoni emphasized that snowfall in november is relatively uncommon in Italy,particularly at lower elevations,and requires specific atmospheric conditions to occur.
“Snow is a rather rare atmospheric phenomenon in the month of November,” Gussoni noted, “and only in the presence of particularly favorable conditions does it manage to reach low altitudes.”
Despite the uncertainty, current forecasts suggest a decidedly dynamic and colder period is approaching, with a progressive drop in temperatures and the possibility of further adverse weather events throughout the remainder of the month.
