Lower Austria to Launch Integrated Public Transport System by 2027, Combining Buses and On-Demand Taxis
Table of Contents
Lower Austria will launch an integrated public transport system in the Römerland Carnuntum region in summer 2027. NÖVOG will combine traditional bus routes with on-demand shared taxis for a more efficient travel experience.
A Two-Tiered approach to Mobility
The system uses a two-tiered approach. leopoldi buses will run on major routes, while leoPOLDI shared call taxis will serve less populated areas and off-peak hours. Officials say the system offers “the best of two mobility worlds.”
Phased Implementation and Route Development
Implementation Timeline- A tender for bus service between Ebreichsdorf, Schwechat, Bruck an der leitha, and hainburg will begin first. Taxi procurement starts in 2026. Key routes, like Vienna-Bruck/Leitha, aim for 30-60 minute frequencies.
Commuter and student Focus
Key Users- The system prioritizes commuters and students with reliable service. It will integrate with the Eastern Railway and S7/Airport Expressway rail networks, using buses and taxis for thorough regional coverage.
Expanding the leopoldi Network
Current Success- NÖVOG has seen success with similar models, including the nearing-completion “weinviertel West” project, launching next year. The goal is uncomplicated, reliable, and predictable public transport.
NÖVOG Takes the Helm of Regional Transport
NÖVOG’s Role- Since late 2024, Niederösterreichische Verkehrsorganisationsges.mbH (NÖVOG) manages all regional public transport in Lower Austria, streamlining routes and coordinating buses and trains. Contact Georg Huemer at 0664/88374482 or [email protected].
