Opposition Chip Whip and General Secretary of Jatiya Party Mujibul Haque Chunnu requested to coordinate the concerned departments to take action on the high risk building.

He said, ‘We raise the sad incident that happened at Bailey Road last Thursday in Parliament. I don’t know what steps have been taken by the government. But we saw different departments at such a fast pace….. Rajuk goes aside and closes a hotel. Again, the South City Corporation is going to one place, and the fire brigade is going again. A competition has begun as to who can block what, break what or catch what. So it seems to me that it’s going through an incoherence.’

He said these things while participating in an unscheduled discussion in the National Parliament on Tuesday (March 5).

Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, ‘Our question is that it has been identified earlier from Rajuk that any building is dangerous and there is a possibility of fire in any building or an accident can happen at any time. It would be better if the concerned departments coordinate or hold one by one. Because we saw that they are taking immediate action from three-four departments. As a result, no one will be seen after a few days, it will become completely silent.’

Chunnu said, ‘One thousand 106 buildings are at risk in Dhaka city. Among them eight markets are very risky. Very risky like Gausia, Barisal Plaza in Fulbaria, New Rajdhani Super Market in Tikatuli, Alauddin Market in Lalbagh, Shahidullah Market and Shakeel Anwar Tower in Chawkbazar, Sharif Market in Sadarghat, Roslin Vista in Siddiqbazar. Gausia market has more traffic of women. If there is an accident here in such a place, I think many people will die. If these markets, including Gausia, are not coordinated by talking to the owners or those who are developers, there is a coordination and safety arrangement, if it is not taken into the view of the government, accidents will happen anytime.

He said, ‘Eid is ahead, now it’s hot. People will go to Gausia, thousands of women will go. I also went with my wife. Can’t walk, automatically have to leave so crowded! If an incident occurs there, it will become a serious situation. One day I went to Mirpur, there is a market called Muktijoddha market. In those eighties, there were about five hundred shops. Everything is broken. Rajuk has declared it risky, but the shopkeepers in the market are not breaking it. This market should also take action.’

Addressing the Prime Minister, Chunnu said, ‘There will be problems again due to lack of coordination. You direct the Rajuk, the City Corporation or the Fire Service to work together. A magistrate goes and demolishes a shop, on the other side the city corporation says no stop it. But it is happening randomly. So you direct the concerned departments to take action on the high risk buildings. So that such incidents do not happen in the future.’
