An investigation is underway in Singapore following allegations of animal abuse against social media influencer Eunice Ng, also known as mermaid.sg on TikTok and Instagram. The probe was launched after a disturbing video circulated online appearing to show the mistreatment of her dog.
The allegations surfaced on December 18, prompting widespread concern and calls for action from social media users. The video, originally posted to Ms. Ng’s now-deleted Instagram account and subsequently shared on Reddit, allegedly depicts a person verbally berating a dog for drinking peach tea. A voice in the recording states, “You’re nothing more than a rat, okay?” before the sound of three distinct impacts is audible, suggesting the animal was struck.
NParks Launches Formal Investigation
The National Parks Board (NParks) confirmed it is actively investigating the matter. Jessica Kwok, NParks’ group director of enforcement and investigation, stated the board is “aware of allegations that a content creator had mistreated a dog” and that “we are currently investigating this case.” The investigation follows reports escalated to the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster within NParks, by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
According to a statement released by the SPCA on December 18, the organization had received multiple reports regarding the alleged abuse and promptly forwarded them to the AVS for further action.
Following the public outcry, Ms. Ng reportedly deleted her social media accounts on both TikTok and Instagram. The Straits Times has reached out to Ms. Ng for comment, but has not yet received a response.
The incident highlights the growing scrutiny faced by social media personalities and the potential for online content to trigger legal investigations. The case also underscores the importance of animal welfare and the severe consequences associated with animal cruelty.
The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
