Australia Braces for Extreme weather: Heatwave in NSW, Cyclone-Strength Winds in South
Australia’s south and east coasts are facing a day of dramatically contrasting and risky weather conditions, with soaring temperatures and potential record-breaking heat in New South Wales juxtaposed against cyclone-strength winds battering Victoria and south Australia. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for extreme conditions and heed all warnings.
NSW faces Extreme Fire Danger Amidst Heatwave
New South Wales is bracing for a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb into the high 30s. The state is anticipating “very high temperatures…combined with very strong winds that will be in the 40 [kph] range, but gusting anywhere up to 60 and 80 kilometres across parts of those areas.” Extreme fire conditions are forecast for parts of the state, prompting urgent warnings from the NSW rural Fire Service (RFS).
NSW RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin emphasized the need for vigilance. “today we’re going to see very high temperatures…combined with very strong winds,” he stated, adding that the RFS is “preparing ourselves for an above-average bushfire season this year.” Residents are urged to be fire aware and have evacuation plans in place. Preparations are underway with volunteers and aircraft on standby to respond to potential outbreaks.
Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury noted the potential for record-breaking temperatures. “We may perhaps see some of the warmest October days on record and new records set in the broader Sydney metro area if we see those high temperatures reaching into those high 30s,” she explained. While temperatures are expected to drop overnight, the peak heat will pose a significant risk throughout the day.
Victoria and South Australia Prepare for Damaging Winds
Further south, Victoria and South Australia are bracing for damaging winds, with gusts potentially reaching 120 kilometers per hour. A severe weather warning has been issued for the vast majority of Victoria and parts of southeastern South Australia, with conditions expected to worsen on Wednesday.
A senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) explained that the intense conditions are linked to a powerful low-pressure system positioned off the southwest coast. “We haven’t seen wind gusts of this nature widespread for some time,” he said, warning of destructive gusts up to 130kph along the coast west of Cape Otway.
The most damaging winds are anticipated to impact the Bellarine Peninsula between 2pm and 4pm, before moving towards the eastern suburbs of Melbourne between 5pm and 7pm. Authorities expect conditions to moderate as the sun sets, with the risk diminishing to the Gippsland and Eastern ranges.
VICSES state agency commander geb Abbott urged Victorians to prepare their properties. “This may be things like making sure wheelie bins are tucked away, that umbrellas have been pulled down and safely stowed, trampolines have been secured,” she advised, warning that trees and branches are likely to fall.
South Australia Battling Wind, Rain, and Heat
South Australia is experiencing a trifecta of challenging weather conditions: damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and extreme heat. overnight, wind gusts reached 89kph at Mount Crawford,83kph at Hindmarsh Island, and 80kph at Nurioopta.
A senior forecaster noted significant rainfall in the Mount Lofty Ranges, with Mount Adam receiving over 50mm of rain as 9am yesterday. While a severe thunderstorm warning for the Mount Lofty Ranges, Mid North, and Murraylands districts has been cancelled, a severe weather warning for damaging winds remains in effect for several regions. Locally destructive winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour are possible along the south-east coast, from Robe to Port MacDonnell.
Despite the challenging conditions in the south, the northern parts of the state are sweltering. The township of Moomba recorded a maximum temperature of 45C, exceeding previous October records. This extreme heat mirrors conditions in Queensland’s Birdsville, highlighting the diverse and challenging weather patterns impacting Australia.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents in affected areas to stay informed and follow all safety advice.
