Under the Public Health Amendment (Motor Neurone Disease) Order 2026, medical practitioners across New South Wales must notify NSW Health of any diagnosed cases. The mandate transforms how health authorities monitor a non-infectious condition, applying a tracking rigor usually reserved for contagious illnesses like COVID-19.
The collected information is extensive. According to state disclosures, the registry records a patient’s full name, address, date of birth, age, gender, Aboriginality, language spoken at home, country of birth, occupation or school, date of onset, notification date, and date of death if applicable, alongside details of the referring doctor. State officials emphasize that all data collected will be kept confidential.

Research published by Professor Rowe’s team shows that total deaths nationwide have more than tripled over a 37-year span, moving from 238 in 1986 to 781 in 2023. Additional findings indicate that residents in rural and regional parts of Australia face a significantly higher risk of dying from the illness compared to city dwellers.
