Indonesian Muslim Organization Nahdlatul Ulama Faces Leadership crisis
A deepening rift over the leadership of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, came too a head on Saturday as internal factions clashed over the fate of Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf. While members of the supreme council maintain his dismissal is valid,senior clerics within the NU are rejecting the move,signaling a prolonged power struggle.
The dispute centers around allegations of financial mismanagement and Staquf’s decision to invite a pro-Israel speaker to an internal event in August. On November 20, the NU supreme council, known as Syuriah, issued an ultimatum demanding Staquf’s resignation or dismissal. When he refused to step down, the council formally removed him from his position on November 26. Though, this decision was largely rejected by NU executives, who argued it violated the organization’s bylaws.
A crucial meeting convened on Saturday at the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java, bringing together NU executives, advisory board members, and representatives from the Syuriah council in an attempt to resolve the escalating conflict.
mohammad Nuh, a former education minister and a representative of the syuriah council attending the forum, acknowledged the meeting as a positive step toward reconciliation. however, he firmly reiterated the council’s authority and the validity of its decision to remove Staquf. “Any ideas for [reconciliation] is welcome, but there’s an institution that makes those decisions in the organization,” Nuh stated, as quoted on NU’s webpage. “The final decision must go through the mechanism [in the council] because this is an organizational issue.”
Nuh emphasized that staquf’s dismissal was not motivated by personal animosity, directly addressing circulating rumors on social media that the ouster was linked to the NU’s involvement with state-owned mining concessions. He asserted that the decision was purely an organizational matter.
