Nuclear submarines in Asia Pacific to counter China: More details of deal out

by time news

California | More information on nuclear submarines allowed to Australia under the Asia Pacific Security Treaty is out. Australia will buy three American nuclear submarines under the OCAS deal. A year and a half ago, Australia, the US and the UK signed the OCUS agreement.

US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a joint statement after meeting in California. The main reason for this security agreement is that China is building up its military power and expanding its presence in the Asia Pacific.

The three countries will collaborate on building artificial intelligence capabilities, hypersonic weapons and other advanced technologies. The joint statement was made at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego. China had earlier responded that the OCS agreement was because of the Cold War mentality.
