Nurse Next Door Brings Personalized In-Home Care to Western Connecticut

by Grace Chen

MONROE, CT – As the demand for in-home healthcare continues to rise, particularly among an aging population, a new option has arrived in western Connecticut. Nurse Next Door, a franchise with over 200 locations across the United States, recently opened its first Connecticut office in Monroe, offering a personalized approach to senior and chronic care. Owner Allison Hulme, a registered nurse with 15 years of experience, aims to provide a higher level of individualized support for families navigating the complexities of at-home care.

Hulme’s venture isn’t simply about filling a service gap. it’s rooted in a deeply personal understanding of the challenges families face when loved ones require ongoing medical assistance. Recognizing the need for “concierge-level nursing support,” she’s built a business model centered on trust, compassion, and a commitment to improving quality of life. This focus on holistic well-being, combined with professional medical expertise, is what sets Nurse Next Door apart.

The timing of Nurse Next Door’s arrival is particularly relevant, given projections for healthcare worker shortages in the state. According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Connecticut is projected to need approximately 54,000 direct health care workers by 2030, a 20% increase from the 44,000 in 2020. This report highlights the growing need for accessible and reliable healthcare services, especially for those who prefer to receive care in the comfort of their own homes.

Bridging the Gap in Home Healthcare

Nurse Next Door offers a range of services, including private-duty nursing and certified nurse’s aide support for personal care. The company distinguishes itself through personalized care plans tailored to each client’s unique medical needs, lifestyle, and personal goals. Unlike some healthcare models, Nurse Next Door operates on a private-pay basis, which Hulme says allows for greater flexibility and quicker access to care. “Without the limitations that can sometimes accompany insurance-driven models, care can be tailored to the individual’s unique needs and preferences,” she explained.

This approach isn’t intended to replace traditional healthcare providers, but rather to complement them. Nurse Next Door positions itself as a bridge between hospital or physician visits and the ongoing support needed for recovery and long-term management of chronic conditions. Services include skilled nursing oversight, medication management, and assistance with daily living activities.

A Philosophy of “Happier Aging”

Beyond medical assistance, Nurse Next Door embraces a philosophy called “Happier Aging™.” This approach emphasizes understanding what brings joy and meaning to each client’s life. Caregivers and nurses work to create experiences that support not only physical health but similarly emotional well-being, incorporating clients’ interests, hobbies, and personal goals into their care plans. “We aim for every client to feel respected, supported, and able to continue living life on their own terms,” Hulme said.

This focus on quality of life is a direct reflection of Hulme’s own experiences. She described growing up watching her mother struggle with alcoholism and later rebuild her life, eventually becoming a private duty caregiver herself. “Watching the pride, grace, and compassion she brought to caring for others had a profound impact on me,” Hulme shared. She also cared for her mother through the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease, gaining firsthand insight into the needs of both patients and families.

From Personal Loss to a Business with Purpose

Hulme’s commitment to compassionate care extends beyond her professional life. In 2014, following the loss of her sister, Wendy, she established Wendy’s Heart LLC and purchased the Nurse Next Door franchise. “I hope to be able to help women at risk for domestic abuse when my business is successful,” Hulme stated, indicating a long-term vision for her company to contribute to broader social needs.

Initially operating from a home office, Hulme built her practice within the community before opening the brick-and-mortar location at 755 Main St. In Monroe earlier this year. The office serves not only Monroe but also surrounding towns like Newtown and Roxbury. Local officials have welcomed the addition, recognizing the value of accessible healthcare services. Newtown Economic and Community Development Director John Voket noted the positive impact Nurse Next Door will have on addressing the growing demand for in-home care in the region.

Looking Ahead

Nurse Next Door’s expansion into Connecticut represents a significant step in addressing the state’s projected healthcare workforce needs. Hulme and her team are focused on continuing to build a strong network of certified and compassionate caregivers, ensuring they can meet the evolving needs of the community. The company is actively recruiting and training qualified professionals to provide high-quality, personalized care.
