TNC Establishes Science Board too Drive Innovation in Fresh Pet Nutrition
Table of Contents
A growing body of research supports the benefits of natural, minimally processed diets for pets, and The Nutriment Company (TNC) is doubling down on science-backed nutrition with the formation of a dedicated science board. The move signals a pivotal moment for the European premium fresh pet food producer as it seeks to solidify its position in a rapidly evolving market.
A Commitment to Scientific rigor
TNC, headquartered in stockholm, Sweden, has assembled a seven-member board comprised of both internal animal nutrition specialists and leading external experts. The board will provide scientific guidance, advise on product advancement, and support collaborative research initiatives focused on pet health and nutrition. This commitment reflects a broader industry shift toward recognizing the critical link between diet and overall animal well-being.
“As veterinarians,we increasingly see the impact that nutrition has on overall well-being,” stated Dr. Christine Nees, a veterinarian with extensive experience in pet nutrition and clinical practice, and a new member of the board. “By championing fresh, minimally processed foods, we’re helping drive a much-needed shift in how we nourish our pets – one that prioritizes long-term health, quality, and care.”
Expertise at the Forefront
the science board includes Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman, assistant professor at the University of Helsinki and founder of the DogRisk Research Group. Her research program investigates the long-term effects of diets on canine health, and has shown that dogs fed fresh, species-appropriate diets demonstrate significant health advantages compared to those fed kibble. Given that over half of domestic dogs and cats are classified as overweight or obese – conditions linked to metabolic dysfunction, joint problems, and other health challenges – these findings are notably significant. Excess weight in cats has also been associated with urinary and kidney-related disorders.
Research consistently links natural feeding to stronger gut microbiomes, healthier skin and coats, improved immune balance, and reduced risks of allergies, otitis, and digestive disorders. Pets consuming fresh diets also exhibit higher energy levels, better stool quality, and long-term protection against inflammatory and metabolic diseases.
Expansion Through Strategic Acquisitions
TNC has been actively expanding its presence across Europe and into new pet food segments throughout 2025 through a series of strategic acquisitions. These include:
- Easy-BARF (France), acquired in October 2025, a fresh pet food manufacturer.
- Purrform (UK), acquired in July 2025, a cat food supplier.

A Future Rooted in Science
Paul van der Hook, chairman of the science board and chief production & logistics officer at TNC, emphasized that fresh pet nutrition is “not a trend; it is a science-backed movement that has the potential to change the lives of millions of pets.” The company plans to collaborate with academic institutions, including the DogRisk Research Group, to support ongoing studies and deepen the scientific understanding of natural nutrition.
“We are honored to welcome such highly respected experts to our science board,” said Anders Kristiansen, CEO of TNC. “Their experience and dedication to advancing natural nutrition will shape the future of our industry.” The board’s ultimate aim is to develop research-backed formulations and work with veterinarians to promote evidence-based feeding recommendations, solidifying TNC’s commitment to a healthier future for pets.
