Nvidia’s ‘Frame Warp’ Tech Promises 81% Latency Reduction, But Remains Unreleased

A new latency reduction technology from Nvidia, dubbed “Frame Warp,†is showing important promise in early testing, delivering up to an 81% decrease in input lag. However,despite being unveiled nearly a year ago alongside the Blackwell architecture,the feature remains unavailable in major game titles.
Nvidia’s Reflex 2 suite, which includes Frame Warp, aims to minimize the perceived delay between a player’s actions and the on-screen response — a critical factor in fast-paced gaming. Frame Warp utilizes spatial reprojection, predicting and adjusting camera positions based on fresh mouse input data collected during frame rendering. Nvidia claims this process will create a heightened sense of “connectedness†and responsiveness for PC gamers.
The technology is particularly relevant alongside Nvidia’s Multi Frame Generation (MFG), which can introduce considerable input latency. Frame Warp is designed to mitigate this penalty, offering a smoother and more responsive experience even with MFG enabled.
Despite the potential benefits, the rollout of Reflex 2 with Frame Warp has been curiously slow. while all GeForce RTX 50-series cards list the feature as “coming soon†in their specifications, it has yet to be integrated into key titles showcased at events like CES, including The Finals and Valorant.
Modder Creates Working Demo,reveals Lingering Issues
The wait hasn’t stopped resourceful members of the PC gaming community from exploring frame Warp’s capabilities. Modder PureDark, known for implementing upscaling and frame generation technologies in games lacking native support, recently discovered DLL files related to Reflex 2’s Frame Warp functions within the ARC Raiders Playtest files.
Leveraging these files, PureDark developed a functional demo of Frame Warp, available for download via Patreon. Initial testing confirms the technology delivers on its promise of reduced latency, though some visual artifacts remain.
“The tech does noticeably improve perceived responsiveness when it’s enabled,†one tester reported, noting that the benefits are likely more pronounced on higher refresh rate monitors.Even with minor visual imperfections, the improved responsiveness is compelling.
Significant Latency Drops Observed in Testing
using Nvidia’s frameview application, testers measured a dramatic reduction in PC latency. With Frame Warp disabled, latency measured approximately 7.8 ms at 240 FPS. Enabling Frame Warp dropped latency into the 1-2 ms range at the same frame rate — an 81% decrease.
However,the demo isn’t without its drawbacks. Testers observed “swimminess or distortion†at the edges of the screen when Frame Warp is active, even on the latest Blackwell hardware. The artifacts appear to be less intrusive at frame rates of 120 FPS and above,suggesting an optimal performance window.
Older Hardware Shows Limitations
Interestingly, the Frame Warp demo also functions on older GeForce RTX 2080 Ti cards. Though, the image quality artifacts are significantly worse on this hardware, and do not diminish with increased frame rates. this suggests that the latest-generation Tensor Cores found in Blackwell cards are best suited to deliver an optimal experience with the technology.
While the demo provides an exciting glimpse into the potential of Reflex 2 and Frame Warp, it’s important to remember this is an early look. The reasons for Nvidia’s delayed rollout remain unclear, but the community eagerly awaits its integration into shipping games. As one analyst noted, “We’re not sure what’s holding Nvidia and its software partners back from introducing it, but we hope it makes its way into shipping games sooner rather than later.â€
