New York Prison Guards Sentenced in Brutal Beating Death of Robert Brooks

Four former New York prison guards received lengthy prison sentences Friday for their roles in the death of Robert Brooks, an incarcerated man whose beating at the Marcy Correctional Facility was captured on body-worn camera.

The sentencing marks a significant growth in a case that sparked outrage and fueled calls for reform within the state’s correctional system. The four guards pleaded guilty in September, narrowly avoiding trial just two weeks before jury selection was set to begin.

Brutal Assault and Initial Outcry

On December 9, 2022, robert Brooks, 43, was fatally beaten while handcuffed at the Marcy correctional Facility. The incident, which involved multiple guards, was recorded by their own body-worn cameras, providing damning evidence of the excessive force used against the restrained inmate. Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault as 2017 and was transferred to Marcy from a nearby facility on the night of the attack. The video footage reportedly showed Brooks being struck in the chest with a shoe, lifted by his neck, and then dropped.

Sentencing Details and Plea Agreements

Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina, initially charged with murder, each received 22-year prison terms after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Two additional guards, Michael Mashaw, and David Walters, also pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and were sentenced to three to nine years and two years, four months to seven years, respectively.

This sentencing follows earlier plea deals in the case. In August, Christopher Walrath, who resigned from his position, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter. Another guard pleaded guilty to attempted tampering with physical evidence in May and received a one-year conditional discharge.

family’s Plea for Justice and Reflection

during the sentencing hearing, prosecutors shared statements from Brooks’ family. His brother, Jared Ricks, expressed a poignant hope that the defendants would experience the same lack of compassion they showed his brother, according to reporting from Syracuse.com. Brooks’ son, Robert Brooks Jr., described watching the video of his father’s beating as akin to witnessing a horror movie, and implored others to recognize the humanity of incarcerated individuals. “I pray this case teaches others that they can’t treat incarcerated people like animals,” he wrote.

Procedural Issues and Ongoing Cases

A senior official stated that the defendants were prevented from reading their own statements during the hearing due to objections from their attorneys, stemming from a failure by the prosecutor, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, to file the necessary paperwork.

The legal proceedings surrounding Brooks’ death are not yet fully concluded.A jury last month convicted David Kingsley on both counts of murder and first-degree manslaughter, possibly facing a life sentence. Mathew galliher and Nicholas Kieffer were acquitted of all charges. Michael Fisher is scheduled to stand trial in January on a second-degree manslaughter charge.

Broader Investigation into Prison Violence

Fitzpatrick is also leading the prosecution of guards involved in another fatal beating, this one of Messiah Nantwi at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in march 2023. Eight guards have already reached plea deals in the nantwi case, and five more are scheduled to stand trial in March, including two facing murder charges. Both Marcy and Mid-State Correctional Facilities are located approximately 180 miles (290 kilometers) northwest of New York City.

These cases collectively highlight a disturbing pattern of violence within New York’s correctional facilities and underscore the urgent need for systemic reform and increased accountability.
