A 99-year-old man was the victim of a violent assault and theft in Washington Heights, New York, on Monday, September 23, after an armed individual stole approximately $20,000 from his office. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is actively investigating the incident and seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect.
Targeted Attack Reveals Premeditation
According to police investigation, the aggressor appeared to have meticulously studied the victim’s routines before carrying out the attack. This suggests a targeted assault rather than a random act of violence. A senior official stated, “It was evident that the author of the robbery knew the building and the owner’s daily routine well.”
The incident unfolded when the building owner, whose identity has not been released, was approached by an individual claiming to have a package. The suspect was aware of a discreet side entrance to the property, as reported by the New York Post. As the owner went to open the door, the assailant forced their way inside, initiating a struggle.
Violent Confrontation and Theft
Once inside, the attacker reportedly brandished a weapon and forced the 99-year-old to lead them to an office in the basement. This office housed the rental income collected from the building and two other properties owned by the victim. During the descent to the office, a brief struggle ensued.
Detective Chief Kenny described the harrowing moment, stating, “The 99-year-old owner tries to resist. During the fight at the entrance, his hand is trapped between the other door and the metal frame, injures it and requires suture points.” The suspect, who authorities believe spoke only Spanish, ultimately gained access to the office and stole $20,000 stored in a closet before fleeing on foot.
Victim’s Condition and Community Response
The attack left the victim with two fractured fingers and a wound to his hand. He was transported to the Irving Medical Center of the University of Columbia/Presbyterian in New York for medical treatment. The victim’s grandson told local press that his grandfather “is a warrior, is very strong. That strength transmitted me.”
The suspect is described as wearing a black balaclava, black gloves, a gray sweatshirt, black sports pants, and white shoes. The NYPD has released surveillance camera footage of the suspect and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
Citizens can provide tips by calling 1-800-577-Tips (8477) or, in Spanish, at 1-888-57-pista (74782). Information can also be submitted anonymously through the NYPD’s website: https://crimstoppers.nypdonline.org/.
