Tech Stocks & S&P 500: Can Tech Fuel a 7,000 Rally?

Tech Rebounds, Banks Waver, and Markets Eye Key Levels

Following a bank-led sell-off, global markets found footing Thursday as technology stocks surged, fueled by optimism surrounding artificial intelligence and a cooling of geopolitical tensions.

yesterday’s market turbulence gave way to a more positive tone as investors recalibrated their portfolios. The technology sector spearheaded the recovery, while easing concerns over potential US military involvement in Iran provided additional support. Precious metals experienced significant volatility but ultimately staged a rebound, and analysts are now focusing on opportunities in chipmakers, energy, and the banking sector.

Technology Stocks Lead the Charge

TSMC (NYSE:) reported strong demand for its advanced chips, driven by the AI boom, and its outlook remains robust,” noted one analyst.

The positive news sent TSMC shares sharply higher and boosted S&P 500 futures. The optimism extended to Europe, where the index reached another record high. Chip-equipment makers led the charge in Europe, with ASML, TSMC’s largest supplier, surging alongside Applied Materials and Lam Research. This renewed enthusiasm for AI follows weeks of investor rotation away from mega-cap tech stocks and toward companies with improving growth prospects.

other Markets Show Mixed Signals

Elsewhere, positive sentiment continued to support cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin sitting close to a two-month high. The US dollar was broadly steady, while the Japanese Yen faced headwinds amid warnings of potential foreign exchange intervention.

The precious metals market experienced a volatile session, initially pulling back before rebounding impressively. Silver, such as, recovered from a 7% drop to trade only 2% lower at above $91 at the time of writing. Crude oil, though, fell for the frist time in six sessions after President Donald Trump suggested a potential delay in any intervention in Iran.

Banks Remain Under Pressure

Today’s gains in futures and European markets follow a sharp decline on Wall Street yesterday, where bank stocks led the sell-off as the fourth-quarter earnings season began. Wells Fargo (NYSE:) and Citigroup (NYSE:) were among the hardest hit. Wells Fargo reported a 13% drop in fourth-quarter profits despite a modest rise in annual revenues, while Citigroup reported net income that fell short of expectations.

JPMorgan Chase had previously set a negative tone, revealing a 7% fall in profits for the final quarter of 2025,attributed to weaker investment banking revenues and increased provisions for potential loan losses. The financial sector has also faced additional pressure following Trump’s suggestion last Friday of capping credit card interest rates at 10%.

Despite these headwinds, the banking sector enjoyed a stellar year in 2025, collectively adding around $600 billion in market value, according to the FT. “The recent weakness in the sector could present a buying possibility for select names with solid fundamentals,” a senior official stated.

S&P 500 Technical Analysis and Levels to Watch

After reaching the 7,000 mark a few days ago, S&P 500 futures eased back as traders took profits. However, the index has not fallen significantly from this level, suggesting the bullish trend remains intact.

“While the pace of the rally has slowed, the lack of bearish triggers has kept downside pressure contained,” one analyst noted.

Though, this loss of momentum warrants attention, as it could signal an impending correction. For now, there are no clear technical reversal signals. Attention should remain focused on key support levels to gauge demand. The 6,940 area has held as initial support, with 6,900 representing a more significant support zone. A decisive break below 6,900 could trigger increased volatility.

on the upside, 7,000 remains a critical hurdle. Clearing this level convincingly could unlock a move to fresh highs, with limited obvious resistance beyond that point. Investors should monitor Fibonacci extension levels as potential targets in the event of continued gains.
