New York ∙ The City Council proposed to increase the hourly salary of food service workers in New York City to $23.82. The employees have been raising their voices for the right wages for days.

Employees of Uber Eats, Grimp, Hub and Dordaf companies that deliver through the app will get its benefits. It will have to wait until 2025 for it to take effect in full. After holding a public hearing on December 16, the proposal is to pay $17.87 an hour in the first phase, and then $23.82 by April 2025.

Based on the app, New York City has an estimated 60,000 employees. They are not entitled to any benefits as they are working as contract employees. City aims to change this and give them the status of employees.

According to a report by the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, these workers earn an average of $7.09 without tip. The New York State Restaurant Association is concerned about the proposal. Many Indians, including working Malayalis, will get relief when the law comes into effect.
