O2 Boosts Scottish Network Coverage for Staycationers and Remote Adventures

Millions of British holidaymakers planning a summer staycation in Scotland will benefit from significant upgrades to O2’s 4G and 5G network, ensuring connectivity even in the country’s most isolated locations. The operator’s investment comes as demand for domestic travel surges, fueled by both economic pressures and a desire for unique experiences.

Staycations Drive Demand for Reliable Mobile Coverage

Research from O2 indicates that nearly half of British holidaymakers – 48% – are planning a getaway to Scotland this summer. Crucially, one in three travelers say that reliable mobile coverage directly influences their destination choice. This highlights the growing importance of staying connected, even while seeking escape.

Amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, 41% of respondents are choosing to remain in the UK to save money, while 25% specifically cite the ability to bring their pets along as a key factor in selecting Scotland as their destination. The allure of the Scottish landscape is also boosted by popular culture, with 13% inspired by television shows and films like Outlander, The Traitors, and Trainspotting.

The Fear of Going Off-Grid

While many are eager to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, the desire for connectivity remains strong. O2’s research reveals that 62% of holidaymakers worry about getting lost without GPS navigation, and over half (55%) fear being unable to contact their accommodation.

Furthermore, nearly half (48%) are concerned about finding local amenities, and 43% consider streaming music or podcasts essential to their holiday experience. For families, reliable mobile signal is particularly important, with almost a third (31%) stating it’s crucial for keeping children entertained during travel.

Targeted Upgrades Across Scotland

O2’s network improvements extend beyond major cities, with 782 upgraded postcodes in Edinburgh and substantial enhancements across the Highlands. Over the past 12 months, the operator has increased 4G and 5G network capacity in more than 13,000 Scottish postcodes, reaching some of the UK’s most remote areas.

Recent installations of small cells in Perth and the activation of next-generation 5G standalone network technology in Stirling demonstrate O2’s commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure.

The upgrades also target unique tourist destinations, including Corrour Station – famously featured in Trainspotting and the UK’s highest railway stop – Barra Airport (the only airport in the world with a scheduled beach runway), Loch Ossian Eco Hostel, and Glen Affric Hostel, accessible only by foot or bike.

Expanding the Mobile Transformation Plan

“Scotland has always been one of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the UK, but now it’s better connected than ever before,” stated a senior official at O2. “Thanks to O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan, whether they’re hiking the Highlands, flying into Barra, or visiting a rural island, visitors can stay connected when and where it matters most.”

O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan focuses on expanding 4G and 5G coverage, deploying small cells in urban areas, and addressing network issues along railway lines, at airports, on motorways, and in large venues. The company has also recently secured a deal with Vodafone to acquire 78.8 MHz of spectrum, increasing its total holdings to approximately 30% of UK mobile spectrum. This additional spectrum will be vital for supporting future growth in data demand and ensuring a consistently high-quality mobile experience for customers across Scotland and beyond.
