The World Porridge Championships in the Scottish Highlands are no joke. It’s about oats, water, salt and the golden spoon.

If everyone in Carrbridge, a small village in the Scottish Highlands, weren’t so nice to each other, you could imagine yourself in an episode of the English crime series “Inspector Barnaby”: A small village and a somewhat bizarre competition – only murdered, that’s for sure nobody here. Carrbridge is far too harmonious for that. How else could the approximately 700 residents organize two world-class events here every year on a purely voluntary basis?

There is the competition for the most beautiful wooden sculpture carved with a chainsaw, which takes place in September. And the other, a month later, “The Golden Spurtle”. Spurtle is the name of the wooden stick that people in Scotland use to stir porridge so that it doesn’t lump or burn. The Golden Spurtle is the prize for whoever cooks the world’s best porridge. This year marks the 30th time it has been awarded, and the competition is bigger than ever.
