Mendelian randomization works by leveraging naturally occurring genetic variations that influence BMI. These genetic variants act as proxies for BMI-altering medications, allowing researchers to mimic a randomized controlled trial. Because genetic variants are randomly inherited, the method minimizes the influence of confounding factors, providing a more reliable assessment of causality.
