Olivier Faure facing anger. The boss of the Socialist Party is widely criticized on social networks, and part of the political class, this Friday after his comments on the war between Israel and Hamas. “Shame on Olivier Faure, that I don’t meet him”, notably scathed the former socialist deputy for Essonne Julien Dray on X.

In question ? A tweet published by the socialist this Friday shortly after midnight. “No one should be silent. This is not a response. October 7 has become a pretext not only to make Gaza unlivable but to colonize the West Bank,” he wrote, in response to a message from the NGO Doctors Without Borders which deplored the death of a teenager in the West Bank. “The Israeli extreme right will have to be held accountable to the whole world,” adds the politician.

Until then, Olivier Faure had rather expressed himself in favor of a ceasefire and a two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian. “Our support for Israel, as for any democracy hit by terrorism, is unwavering within the limits of international law,” wrote the deputy for Seine-et-Marne, on his blog on October 10three days after the start of the war.

The socialist had also distanced himself from La France insoumise in the midst of the agony of the Nupes electoral alliance, after repeated refusals to qualify Hamas attacks against Israel as “terrorist”. Since the beginning of November, the PS has called for demonstrations for the Palestinians in a message dissociated from that of LFI.

Faced with the outcry, Olivier Faure responded to his own message this Friday at 8:30 a.m. “If you can read has become an excuse. No one denies the terrorist barbarity of 7/10 (October 7) but the tragedy in no way justifies collective punishment or the acceleration of colonization. If Hamas is a terrorist organization then there is no justification for all Palestinians to pay,” he writes. Since the start of the war, the Jewish state has continued its colonization policy in the Palestinian territories. The construction of a new colony was approved on December 6 in the West Bank, but also in East Jerusalem – occupied and annexed by Israel.

“Serious words”, denounces Ciotti

On the right, the political class does not spare it either. The president of the Republicans Eric Ciotti castigates “very serious words” about Far-right MPs, National gatheringl and Reconquest!, also pin it on social networks.

This controversy comes at a time when the president of the Socialist Party finds himself in a delicate situation within his party. After his refusal to participate in the “Saint-Denis meetings”, invited by Emmanuel Macron, he was disconcerted internally by calling for a “large gathering” against anti-Semitism, not closing the door to participation by the RN. The result, for some, of an “illegible” or “clumsy” strategy since the vote for a PS moratorium on its participation in Nupes. “I don’t know at all where we are going,” whispered a socialist leader.
