During a press conference this Friday, April 21, the project to build 184 housing units on the former military site of Diekirsh was finally officially presented.

The Minister of Housing, Henri Kox, was present for the occasion. This Friday, April 21, the Diekirch affordable neighborhood project was finally officially presented at a press conference, after four years of silence. Between the vote of the PAP in 2019, for this project announced in July 2018, and the adoption of the bill authorizing the State to participate in the financing of the work on March 31, nothing had changed.

Now, no more room for doubt with this press conference. 184 housing units, including a mixed building hosting various public functions and the army, will indeed be built on the former military site of Diekirch. Valued at 190.5 million euros, the work should be completed in 2031.

With this official presentation, nothing new since the adoption of the bill, but some details of the “Military City” have been revealed. As the real estate developer of the project, the National Society for Cheap Housing (SNHBM) will build 124 affordable housing units.

Limited car traffic for the 420 inhabitants

Of these homes, 90% will be rented and the remaining 11 will be put up for sale, it was announced. For the 60 housing units built for the Luxembourg army, they will be intended to accommodate young soldiers, with an area that should vary between 67 and 75 m2.

On the development side, all roads will be limited to 20 km/h and the new district will be occupied by a pedestrian zone. “A deliberately restrictive approach has been designed to limit car traffic. »

For the comfort of the future 420 inhabitants, a central green promenade will be built. Composed of trees, it will begin at the entrance to the site, rue Alexis-Heck, and will guide users of the pedestrian street towards the banks of the Sûre below.

Finally, the financing was detailed. For the 53 million euros earmarked for affordable housing, these budgetary appropriations are charged to the Special Housing Development Support Fund. The 137.5 million euros dedicated to the construction of a mixed-use building come from the budget of the Ministry of Finance.
