Ofra Ofer Oren is the grand winner of the Lottery’s Sapir Prize for Literature for 2023, for her book “What Happened to Immigrate in Eilat” published by Kinneret Zamora Dvir.

The award ceremony took place this evening (Tuesday) in Ofakim. “It is not easy and emotionally difficult to celebrate and be happy these days,” Ofer Oren said. “How is it that life goes on when the abductees are still there and soldiers are still fighting? Is this legitimate? I have no answer. But beyond questioning, it is strengthening and comforting to be precisely here in the horizons. Before I finish, I want to ask for the souls of our abductees. Demand, beg and wish for their return.” .

Ofer Oren will receive a cash prize of NIS 180,000, and her book will be translated into Arabic and another language of her choice.

The other nominees for the award were Hanoch Marmari for his book “Teeth Signs”, Gil Haravan for her book “Chaim”, Tami Bezaleli for her book “Oh Mama” and Orly Castel Blum for her book “Biotope”.

The winner of the award for a debut book is Ilana Rudashevski for her book “Taske”. She will receive a prize of NIS 75,000.

The judging committee was led this year by journalist Oren Nahari, and included Prof. Avner Holtzman (Department of Literature at Tel Aviv University; member of the Israel National Academy of Sciences and member of the Academy of the Hebrew Language), Dr. Tami Israeli (head of the Department of Literature at Levinsky College, reviewer, editor-in-chief “Muft”), Dr. Shmulik Faust (researcher of Israeli Sage literature, literary critic and editor of the “Shabbat” supplement of Makor Rishon newspaper), Dr. Zohar Almakais (writer, translator, cultural researcher, doctoral student) and Liat Elkayim (writer) , journalist, columnist, nominated for the 2019 Sapir Bikurim Award). The ceremony will be broadcast on Bekhet 12 at 22:45.
