OHSAA Unveils New Playoff Format, Announces High School Football Matchups

The Ohio High school Athletic Association (OHSAA) released the official matchups for the high school football playoffs Sunday afternoon, ushering in a new era for the competition. this season’s playoffs feature an expanded format, qualifying the top 12 teams in each region, with important changes to seeding adn home-field advantage.

The most notable shift is the qualification increase, allowing more teams to compete for a state championship. A senior official stated that the expanded field aims to provide more opportunities for schools across Ohio. Furthermore, the top four teams in each region will receive a bye in the first week of competition, a strategic advantage designed to reward regular-season success.

Another key change involves the seeding process, which now places a greater emphasis on regular-season performance.The OHSAA believes this will create a more accurate and competitive playoff bracket.

Division V Region 20 Playoff Schedule

Division V, Region 20, is scheduled for Friday, November 31st, and features several intriguing matchups:

  • 12 West Liberty-Salem (5-5) @ #5 Carlisle (8-2)

  • 11 Mariemont (6-4) @ #6 North College Hill (8-2)

  • 10 Arcanum (7-3) @ #7 Preble Shawnee (9-1)

  • 9 Greeneview (7-3) @ #8 North Union (6-4)

Four teams have earned a bye:

  • 1 Williamsburg (10-0) will play the winner of Greeneview/North Union on November 7th.

  • 2 Indian Lake (8-2) will play the winner of Arcanum/Preble Shawnee on November 7th.

  • 3 Miami East (9-1) will play the winner of Mariemont/North College Hill on November 7th.

  • 4 Graham (8-2) will play the winner of West Liberty-Salem/Carlisle on November 7th.

Division VI Region 24 Playoff Schedule

Division VI, Region 24, also kicks off its playoff journey on Friday, October 31st, with the following contests:

  • 12 Covington (5-5) @ #5 Coldwater (6-4)

  • 11 Deer Park (5-5) @ #6 Anna (7-3)

  • 10 Dayton Christian (6-4) @ #7 Rock Hill (6-4)

  • 9 Portsmouth West (5-5) @ #8 Summit Country Day (5-5)

the following teams received a first-round bye:

  • 1 Tri-Village (10-0) will play the winner of Portsmouth West/Summit country Day on November 7th.

  • 2 Northeastern (9-1) will play the winner of dayton Christian/Rock Hill on November 7th.

  • 3 Mechanicsburg (8-2) will play the winner of deer Park/Anna on November 7th.

  • 4 St. Bernard-Elmwood Place (9-1) will play the winner of Covington/Coldwater on November 7th.
