He argued that the action infringes upon his understanding of federalism and states’ rights. “We believe in the federalist system and states’ rights,” Stitt stated. “Oklahomans would go crazy if [Illinois Governor JB] Pritzker had sent troops to Oklahoma during the Biden administration.”
The governor’s criticism centers on the principle that one governor should not deploy forces into another state without a clear, mutually agreed-upon framework. He emphasized the potential for reciprocal actions, warning that such precedents could be exploited by opposing political factions in the future. “As a believer in federalism, I think a governor should not act against another governor. Trump Administration Bolsters Illinois National Guard Amid Protests
The deployment involves a total of 500 troops – 200 from the Texas National Guard and 300 from the Illinois National Guard – sent to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. On Thursday morning, 45 members of the Texas National Guard arrived at an ICE detention center in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The remaining Texas troops are stationed at an Army Reserve training center in Elwood, Illinois, approximately one hour southwest of downtown Chicago.
The troop deployment comes as protests intensify in Chicago regarding ongoing immigration raids. While Governor Stitt voiced support for former President Trump’s efforts to protect ICE agents and maintain “law and order” in cities like Chicago, Portland, and Oregon, he cautioned against setting a precedent for interstate military intervention.
National Governors Association Faces Internal Division
Governor Stitt currently chairs the National Governors Association (NGA), an organization founded in 1908 dedicated to bipartisan solutions for state-level governance. However, the current situation is creating internal friction within the NGA.
Governors JB Pritzker of Illinois and Gavin Newsom of California, both Democrats, have threatened to leave the NGA if the organization fails to condemn the deployment of the National Guard. This ultimatum underscores the deep political divisions surrounding the issue and the potential for the NGA’s traditionally bipartisan role to be compromised.
