In a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz again warned against allowing an escalation of the situation in the Middle East, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

During the conversation today, Netanyahu informed Scholz about the situation in the region, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said. “The chancellor emphasized that the goal now is to avoid escalation and a regional conflagration,” Hebestreit said.

Scholz also explained the decision of the heads of state and prime ministers from the European Council to impose additional sanctions on Iran.

The German chancellor confirmed that his government will continue to coordinate its activities in close cooperation with its partners from the Group of Seven (G-7) and the European Union.

In response to last weekend’s major Iranian attack on its territory, Israel launched a counterattack against military targets in Iran on Friday, according to media reports. However, Iran downplayed the attack as a sign of possible de-escalation. Israel also did not comment on it.

Iran’s large-scale missile attack on Israel was preceded by a missile attack on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which killed two Iranian generals and other officials. This attack was attributed to Israel, DPA recalls.
