One week apart: Another recall of Similac for a baby food product

One week after performing a recall for two Similac products, Abbott Israel reports another recall, of a product called PM60 / 40 from only one production series, Batch No. 27032 K80. The product is valid on April 1, 2023. According to the company’s announcement, the product is given in a medical prescription and is intended for babies with kidney problems.

A statement from the company said that “Following the voluntary collection announcement published on February 19 for the products Elimentom and HMF enriching breast milk, as a precaution and in coordination with the Ministry of Health’s national food service, Abbott extends the voluntary collection to PM60 / 40 product available by medical prescription only. “Intended for babies with kidney problems.” This product is also manufactured at the Sturgis plant located in Michigan USA.

The voluntary collection comes after the news of the death of a baby in the US, which was found to be positive for Cronobacter sakazaki and fed from PM 60/40 from this batch. This case is still under investigation and at this stage the source of the infection has not yet been determined. No complaints were received in Israel regarding this product.

“It should be emphasized that the current move has nothing to do with the other nutrition products of Abbott, which are distributed in Israel, including Similac products that are manufactured in other factories and are safe to use.”

It was also reported that “Abbott performs comprehensive quality tests on all batches of baby food compounds, including microbiology tests before release from the factory for marketing. – The product was found to be negative for the presence of bacteria.

The recall that took place last week in Israel and the United States was made following reports of a baby who died in the United States and three other babies who were hospitalized in Texas, Ohio and Minnesota. The company collected Alimentum baby powder and Human Milk Fortifier powder from the shelves, both made in Sturgis, Michigan, and today another product joins the company’s collection that is also made at the same plant.
