Online Abuse & Violence Against Women: Jakarta Stats

JAKARTA, December 22, 2025 – Reports of violence against women in Greater Jakarta surged this year, with a particularly alarming spike in online abuse and a troubling trend of women being criminalized for speaking out, according to the Jakarta chapter of the legal Aid Foundation of the Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice (LBH APIK Jakarta).

What constitutes effective protection for women in Indonesia? According to LBH APIK Jakarta, despite the enactment of the 2022 Sexual Violence Eradication Law, the number of reported cases continues to climb, indicating systemic failures in safeguarding women’s rights.

A Dramatic Rise in Reported Cases

Throughout 2025, LBH APIK Jakarta, an organization dedicated to women’s rights advocacy, provided assistance in 1,212 cases. This represents a significant 60-percent increase in complaints compared to 2024. The data, compiled from reports across Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi in West Java, and Tangerang city in Banten, paints a grim picture of escalating violence.

the most prevalent form of abuse reported was online-based violence, with 319 cases documented-a stark contrast to the 16 cases reported the previous year. These incidents included threats, the non-consensual sharing of sexually explicit content, threats of physical harm, illegal recording, stalking, and doxing.

Domestic violence remained a significant concern, accounting for 297 reported cases. Victims frequently experienced multiple forms of abuse,both psychological and physical.Sexual violence cases reached 166, including eight cases of child rape and three instances of sexual harassment against children.

This includes providing digital literacy and training for activists and content creators, raising awareness of violence against women and children, as well as guidance on how to report cases in the digital space.

The ministry reported over 6,000 cases of domestic violence this year,and at least 720 cases of online abuse against women were reported through its hotline.
