The total practice of indicators that each year analyze the evolution of the performing, musical and audiovisual arts explain that Spain still needs one last push to overcome the effects of the pandemic. The data is collected by the Sgae Foundation and they were presented this Tuesday.

Streaming music veers from quantity to supposed quality: not everything will be available anymore

The only indicator that has exceeded 2019 levels is revenue from popular music performances (which is not classical music). Comparing 2022 with 2019, there is an increase in concert offerings of 7.5%, although attendees are 11.8% lower and, despite which, collections have grown by 10.3%.

In total, Sgae has recorded that 97,948 concerts took place in Spain during 2022, a spectacular increase of 51.4% compared to 2021. 19.08 million people watched pop, rock, urban and other popular genre concerts during the year past. The figure rises to 24.90 million people if we add macro concerts and festivals, more than double the previous year.

Madrid is the autonomous community that hosts the largest number of concerts, and Andalusia the one that brings together the largest number of spectators. Catalunya is the community that collects the most.

The income obtained from concert ticket sales (without macro festivals) was 228.33 million euros. If we add these great events, such as Primavera Sound, Mad Cool or BBK Live, the collection rises to 449.62 million euros.

Classical music is still far from recovery. It is 22.3% less in concerts, 47.9% less in attendance and 37.1% less in revenue compared to pre-pandemic levels. In 2022, the Valencian Community continues to be the autonomous community with the most classical music concerts.

The performing arts also lack a good boost. Compared to 2019 figures, performances have fallen by 14.6%, while the number of spectators and revenue have fallen by 47.4% and 38.3%, respectively.
