OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens, introducing age-appropriate safeguards and study tools for users aged 13 to 17, amid growing concerns over AI’s impact on adolescent development and safety.
OpenAI unveiled its ChatGPT for Teens platform, targeting adolescents aged 13 to 17 with tailored safety measures and educational tools. The initiative aims to address rising concerns about AI’s role in teenage life, including risks of emotional overreliance, exposure to harmful content, and academic dishonesty. The service, which automatically activates for users under 18, includes restrictions on romantic or sexual chats, self-harm discussions, and explicit material, while emphasizing study support over direct answers.
Safety Features and Content Restrictions
The teen version of ChatGPT blocks content related to self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and explicit material, using age-appropriate interventions. Users cannot access prompts that suggest the AI has personal feelings, consciousness, or sentience, a measure designed to prevent emotional dependency. We want to treat teens like teens, which means that we have to make sure that we’re showing up with the right developmental stage,
said Ann O’Leary, OpenAI’s vice president of global policy, in a statement reported by KCCI.
The platform also restricts the AI from framing itself as more important than family, friends, or educators in a teen’s life. Parents can set “quiet hours” to limit access and receive alerts for high-risk scenarios, such as mentions of self-harm.
Study Mode and Educational Focus
OpenAI designed ChatGPT for Teens to foster critical thinking rather than provide direct answers. The platform includes a “Study Mode” that encourages problem-solving through quizzes, reminders, and time-based restrictions. We continue to also invest in expanding interactive learning because research shows that people learn more effectively when they actively engage and struggle with concepts,
said Allison Mishkin, head of child development at OpenAI, in a KCCI report.

Parental Controls and Age Verification
The platform includes default settings to encourage healthier usage, such as frequent break reminders and prompts reinforcing that ChatGPT is a tool, not a substitute for human relationships.

Industry Context and Broader Implications
Stanford University collaborated on the teen platform’s development, emphasizing the need for age-appropriate interventions
in AI design. As OpenAI expands its reach into schools, the success of ChatGPT for Teens could set a precedent for how tech companies balance innovation with ethical responsibility.
