Orchard Road Brawl: Man Sentenced for Role in Fatal Stabbing, Linked to Prior Offences

A Singaporean man with a history of run-ins with the law has received a lengthy jail sentence and caning for his involvement in a deadly brawl in Orchard Road in August 2023. The incident, which unfolded near Concorde Hotel, resulted in the death of former bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, 29, and has exposed a network of individuals with ties to secret societies.

Escalation of Violence in Orchard Road

Abdul Rahman Gani Abdul Azeez, 35, was sentenced on November 26th to two years, six months, and three weeks in jail, along with three strokes of the cane. Gani pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count of rioting, acknowledging his participation in the violent confrontation. The sentencing comes after a series of court proceedings involving multiple individuals connected to the incident.

The fatal altercation began in the early hours of August 20, 2023, at Club Rumours within the Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall. According to court documents, Gani was already out on bail following an October 2022 arrest for assaulting a 22-year-old man when he joined a group that instigated a clash with two former bouncers, Mr. Isrrat and Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman.

The situation quickly escalated when both bouncers armed themselves with knives. Witnesses reported that Mr. Isrrat and Shahrulnizam began shouting obscenities at the group, triggering a physical fight. Shahrulnizam attacked three men, inflicting a slash wound on Gani’s hand.

Gani’s Actions During the Brawl

While not directly involved in the initial assault on Mr. Isrrat, Gani actively participated in the ensuing violence. He punched Shahrulnizam from behind and then joined others in pursuing Mr. Isrrat. During the chase, Mr. Isrrat’s knife fell to the ground, and Asvain Pacan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, allegedly picked it up and repeatedly stabbed Mr. Isrrat.

Gani then proceeded to stomp and kick Mr. Isrrat while he was on the ground. Mr. Isrrat was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:00 AM. Gani was arrested two days later, on August 22, 2023.

A History of Offenses and Secret Society Links

Prosecutors revealed that Gani has a prior criminal record, including convictions in 2013 and early 2022 for offenses related to unlawful assembly. While the prosecution noted that some members of the rioting group were linked to secret societies, they clarified that Gani had not been involved in any such activities since 2018.

Defense lawyers Rakesh Vasu and Paul argued that their client was remorseful and emphasized that Mr. Isrrat was an “armed attacker.” They also stated that Gani was unaware that Mr. Isrrat had been stabbed during the assault. “The deceased was no innocent bystander but an armed attacker… (Gani) didn’t know the deceased was stabbed during the assault,” they told the court.

Related Cases and Further Sentencing

Asvain Pacan Pillai Sukumaran is currently facing a murder charge in connection with Mr. Isrrat’s death, and his case remains pending. In a related development, Shahrulnizam Osman, 31, was sentenced in December 2024 to two years and nine months’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to offenses including voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges of managing public order and addressing violent crime in Singapore. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of escalating conflicts and the dangers associated with involvement in unlawful assemblies and secret society activities.
