Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega declared that the country would hold no further elections, marking a definitive end to formal political competition and consolidating his rule. The statement, made during the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, came amid international condemnation and accusations of authoritarianism.

A Family Dictatorship Cemented
Ortega’s announcement followed a series of constitutional reforms that extended his presidential term from five to six years and elevated his wife, Rosario Murillo, to the role of “co-president.” Analysts described the move as the final step in transforming Nicaragua into a family dictatorship.
Tiziano Breda, a senior analyst at ACLED, noted that Ortega and Murillo had sealed the country’s transition to a full-fledged family dictatorship,
citing their control over all branches of government and the elimination of political rivals.
The president’s speech included a direct attack on the U.S., which he accused of orchestrating the operation against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. With all their power, they stormed the presidential palace, where Nicolás and his wife, Cilia [Flores], were. They killed the entire security detail there – most of them were Cubans – and took them away to imprison them in the US. It is monstrous,
Ortega said. He also reiterated his claim that the 2018 protests, which left over 350 people dead, were instigated by “coup plotters” and “traitors.”
Erosion of Democracy and International Backlash
The U.S. and the UN have repeatedly criticized Ortega and Murillo, with the latter referred to as the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship
by American officials. Human Rights Watch reported that over 5,600 NGOs, 29 universities, and 58 media outlets have been closed since 2018. Ortega’s government has also launched a purge of the legal profession,
stripping licenses from lawyers who criticize the regime.
The End of Electoral Competition
Ortega’s statement effectively canceled the 2027 elections. There will be no more elections here so that they [the opposition] can try to seize the government,
he said. The president claimed that opposition parties, which he labeled as put in place by the Yankees,
would never regain power. The era in which parties installed by the Yankees… could return to government is over. Never, never, never,
he declared.
Analysts argued that Ortega’s decision to eliminate elections was a response to growing domestic and international pressure. Instead of staging a rigged election, they have opted to eliminate electoral competition altogether,
Breda said. The move aligns with Ortega’s broader strategy of consolidating power, including the 2021 imprisonment of all opposition presidential candidates and the release of political prisoners to the U.S. and Guatemala, often after torture and coercion.
International Reactions and Uncertain Future
The international community has largely condemned Ortega’s announcement. The UN, the U.S., and human rights organizations have called for accountability, while 30 former Ibero-American presidents directly blamed the regime for Rivera’s death. However, the Nicaraguan government has dismissed these criticisms as interference, accusing international bodies of spreading “lies.”
Opposition figures, including former candidate Juan Sebastián Chamorro, argue that Ortega’s regime is now a dictatorship that, without any shame, has entrenched itself in power.
The future remains uncertain, with no clear path for democratic restoration. Ortega, who has reportedly been seen struggling to walk and is said to suffer from lupus and kidney failure, has not addressed succession plans, though reports suggest his wife is conducting an internal purge in preparation for his possible death.
As Nicaragua’s political landscape shifts, the focus remains on whether international pressure can prompt change. For now, Ortega’s declaration marks the end of an era—and the beginning of a new, uncharted chapter under his family’s rule.
