Urgent Appeal as Flu Season Compounds Holiday Dip in Blood Donations

Bilbao, January 18, 2024 – A critical blood shortage is prompting urgent calls for donations across the basque Country, as reserves of all blood types have plummeted following the Christmas holidays and a surge in influenza cases.

Urgent Appeal as Flu season Compounds Holiday Dip in Blood Donations

Health officials are asking citizens to donate blood to replenish dwindling supplies, especially as the flu epidemic peaks.

  • Blood reserves have fallen to concerning levels after the holiday period.
  • The recent flu epidemic has significantly impacted donation rates in December and January.
  • Approximately 400 donations are needed daily to meet the region’s needs.
  • Individuals between 18 and 65, in good health, and weighing over 50 kilograms are eligible to donate.

The Basque department of Health issued the plea this Thursday, noting that while a post-Christmas decline in donations is typical, this year’s situation is exacerbated by the widespread influenza outbreak. “The need is even greater than in previous years,” officials stated. The flu reached its peak in December, preventing many ill individuals from donating throughout the month and into January.

What’s the best way to help address the blood shortage? Donating blood remains the only way to obtain vital components for transfusions and the production of life-saving plasma-derived medicines, according to the Basque Center for Transfusion and Human Tissues (CVTTH). The CVTTH is urging both regular donors and those considering donating for the first time to step forward.

Did you know? – Last year, the Basque Country saw a total of 79,107 blood donations from 46,418 donors, including 6,599 new contributors.

The combination of extended Christmas holidays and increased flu activity has driven reserves below usual levels, necessitating nearly 400 donations each day across Euskadi to maintain adequate supplies. The majority of donors are regular contributors, donating two or more times per year, demonstrating a strong commitment to community health.

Pro tip – To ensure a smooth donation process, drink plenty of fluids and eat a nutritious meal beforehand. Hydration and stable blood sugar levels are key.

To be eligible to donate, individuals must be between 18 and 65 years old, in good health, and weigh more than 50 kilograms. Those affected by a respiratory virus should wait 15 days before donating.
