Golden Globe Awards Nominations Announced, Kicking Off Award Season

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards nominations were unveiled today in Los Angeles, officially launching what is known as “award season.” Leading the pack with nine nominations is the film Battle After Battle, signaling a strong contender for top honors at the January 11th ceremony, which will once again be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser following her successful performance last year.

Battle After Battle, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, received nods in key categories including Best Film (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, and Best Leading Actor in a Musical or Comedy for DiCaprio himself. The film also garnered recognition for its supporting cast, with nominations for Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Tatiana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti. Further accolades include nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Soundtrack, solidifying its position as a frontrunner.

Following closely behind, Sentimental Value secured eight nominations, while Sinners received seven. Hamnet earned six nominations, and both Frankenstein and Wicked – Part 2 landed five each.

The competition for individual acting awards is fierce. Among those vying for Best Lead Actress in a Drama are Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), and Julia Roberts (After the Hunt). The Best Lead Actor in a Drama category features Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nothing). In the Musical or Comedy categories, Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and George Clooney (Jay Kelly) are among the nominees for Best Actor, while Cynthia Erivo (Wicked – Part 2) and Emma Stone (Bugonia) are contenders for Best Actress.

Supporting acting categories also boast impressive nominees, including Ariana Grande (Wicked – Part 2) and Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine) for Best Supporting Actress, and Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein) and Paul Mescal (Hamnet) for Best Supporting Actor.

On the television side, The White Lotus (HBO Max) dominates with six nominations, including Best Drama Series. It will compete against The Diplomat (Netflix), The Pitt (HBO Max), Pluribus (Apple TV), Severance (Apple TV), and Slow Horses (Apple TV). The Best Music and Comedy Series category includes Abbott Elementary (ABC), The Bear (FX on Hulu), Hacks (HBO Max), Nobody Wants This (Netflix), Only Murders in the Building (Hulu), and The Studio (Apple TV).

A closer look at the film category nominations reveals the following:

  • Best Drama Film: Frankenstein, Hamnet, A Simple Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, The Sinners
  • Best Musical or Comedy Film: Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice – There is no other choice, Nouvelle Vague, One battle after another

Further awards will be presented for Best Director, with nominations including Paul Thomas Anderson and Guillermo del Toro, Best Animated Film, Best Foreign Film, and Best Original Song.

Notably, the Italian film Familia by Francesco Costabile did not receive a nomination in the Best Foreign Film category. However, the film remains in contention for the Academy Awards, having been selected to represent Italy in the Best International Film category. The shortlist for the Oscars will be announced on December 16th, with nominations scheduled for January 22, 2026, and the ceremony taking place on March 15th. The absence of Familia from the Golden Globe nominations shifts Italy’s hopes to the Oscars, as one analyst noted.

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards promise to be a glamorous evening celebrating the best in film and television, and the nominations set the stage for a highly anticipated awards season.
